Professional Designations and Credentials

Full Licensure
LMFT – Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
LPC – Licensed Professional Counselor
LCSW – Licensed Clinical Social Worker
The three credentials above indicate that the therapist has completed all of the State of Georgia requirements to practice therapy and counseling on their own without further direction or supervision.

Pre-Licensure
AMFT – Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (sometimes known as LAMFT)
APC – Associate Professional Counselor (sometimes known as LAPC)
LMSW – Licensed Master Social Worker
The three credentials above indicate that the therapist is approved by the State of Georgia to provide therapy and counseling while practicing under clinical direction and clinical supervision while pursuing full licensure. While a therapist is not required to obtain associate credentialing if she or he is practicing under direction and supervision, it is encouraged.

MSFT – Master of Science in Family Therapy
CMHC – Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Other Abbreviations or Designations
AAMFT – American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. It is the professional organization for MFTs
LPCA – Licensed Professional Counselor Association – It is the professional organization for LPCs
NBCC – The National Board for Certified Counselors – It is the Certifying National Board of Professional Counselors
NCC – National Certified Counselor – It is Board Certification designation provided by NBCC.
